Taking a key from Stroker and posting my defensive build. I've had great success with this build so far, although it is mostly for online play, and isn't very good on his own as I haven't chosen any attack powers for him.

If you don't mind the loss of damage, trade out Heavy Lifter or Weapon Specialist for Vengeful Aura. It will be trained next.
I know what most people are going to say... no attack powers, no extra potions. With this build it takes a lot to get me out of the fight, and boosts my allies abilities so that they're able to take down the baddies while I just draw their fire. Very handy in boss fights to lock down the boss and keep squishies from being... squished.
Also, when I activate Invig. Aura, Battle Standard, and War Cry, it still doesn't take half my mana, so I'm quickly able to cast them again once the timer is up, so they're pretty much always active (though I don't do Battle Standard as often as Aura and Cry).
